RJA #13b/c

Application Project Plan:

What i am planning to do my Application Project is write a journal entry of a parent writing about her feelings about her teen going through addiction. I am going to include what she observes in her teen such as signs and symptoms and mostly her trying to understand the reason why this is happening to her teen. Some examples would be pressures, friends, or possibly lack of communication between her and her teen. The examples are all in my research paper its just going to be more situational and personal.

Application Project Example:

The example that I found for my genre is:
http://www.psych.uncc.edu/cdfernal/3480jrnl.html

What i can use from this example to incorporate in my own journal entry is the format that it is written in like including the date and maybe a short title on each one. I could separate my own entry into more than one like the example to show different days perspective and feeling. This entry had many deep thoughts which I would need to make my journal entry strong and detailed observations to give the reader a closer outlook of what she sees and or going through.

RJA #12 Field Research Report

The field research I conducted was an interview with a substance abuse therapist
The Questions I asked were:

Do you think family history has a decision on who is more likely to abuse?
I do, family is a part of who the person is and having a supportive family vs. a negative one can have a huge impact.

What kind of pressures do teens experience?
Teens go through quite a lot of pressure which could include anything. Some common ones are family, school, peers, making the right decisions, and just figuring out who they are.

Do you think any of these pressures result in substance abuse?
If they are dealt with in the wrong way, then absolutely.

What are some basic things teens can do themselves to stop becoming dependent on substances?
Talk to someone is the first step. It all starts with good communication and the teen reaching out for help before the problem gets worse. If the teen thinks they can handle the problem on their own that is also put into consideration.

RJA #12

“Fighting Substance Abuse.” The Columbian Electronic Encyclopedia. 6th ed. 2007. Infoplease. Web. 15 Apr. 2010.
This source is an encyclopedia that I found online that gave me some information on strategies to stop drug abuse in America. It didn't focus on a certain group, just dugs in general. The strategies it came up with were supply and demand for the solution. Supply meaning shorting the supply of drugs that are here, so that they are more expensive and people have less access to them. Demand was reduction involved in education and treatment. Things that they included as examples were more treatment centers, stricter laws on drug possession, and more education in schools.

Arneson, David, and Drug Policy Education Group. “Methadone Withdrawal.” Drug Policy Education Group. 25 Mar. 2005. Web. 15. Apr. 2010.

This source was written by doctor who gave a ton of information on methadone. He talked about the signs and symptoms of how addictive the drug is and treatment options for someone hooked on methadone. He went into detail about what chemicals are in the drug and how it is given to heroin addicts to wing them off of heroin which results in becoming addicted to another drug. In my paper I used this source to state how terrible the withdrawals are compared to nicotine in my argument. This source reveals the truth about methadone treatment centers and which ones are actually worth going to for the prices that people offer these days.

Perry, Jennifer L., and Marilyn E. Carroll. "The Role of Impulsive Behavior in Drug Abuse." Psychopharmacology 200 (2008): 1-26. Web. 14 Apr. 2010.

This source is a journal that comes from psychopharmacology. It talked about how impulsive behavior can result in drug abuse and how teens who show impulsive behavior are at risk for abusing substances. They did experiments to back up their results and the journal was written as a study including the analysis of the study and the conclusion that revealed the impulsive behavior results. They focused on two tasks that resulted in impulsive behavior for their measurement which were impulsive choice (delay discounting task) and inhibitory failure (go/no-go, stop signal reaction time, and five-choice serial reaction time tasks.

Dell, Kristina. "Inside the Adolescent Brain." Academic Search Premier. EBSCO, 10 May 2004. Web. 14 Apr. 2010.

This source gave information on parts of the brains that teens use. They compare what parts are commonly used in adults and which ones teens use in thinking. The adolescent brain isn't fully developed compared to an adult brain which shows different characteristics between the two on how they think and act. The brain of a teen uses the amygdala more than the adult, which results in impulsive behavior during emotional times. The adults rely more on the pre frontal cortex which isn't dully developed in the teen. The knowledge this source had on the parts of the brain made it easy to put it in my paper. It broke it down into small paragraphs for each part.

The National Institute of Drug Abuse. "Facts about the Effects of Marijuana for Teens."
Web. 13 Apr. 2010

This source had facts about Marijuana and what it does to the body, or how it works. It revealed common myths that you hear about this drug that teen's might believe and then shows the real information. It focused on one drug, and gave statistics of actually how many teens abuse it. This is the most commonly abused substance other than alcohol. These days teens believe anything, so if someone were to say that the substance isn't addictive it could put the teen in danger once they become dependent on it.

Pinsky, Drew. “Season 3: Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.” Prod. White Duncan. VH1.

Television
This source gave a real life cap of how addictive drugs are and how it ruined the lives of these people on the show getting help. Most of them that got interviewed on this show had adolescent trauma which could by underlying their addiction. They talk about their problems and reveal parts of their life to Dr. Drew and how addiction has impacted their life. The people on this show are well-known celebrities which is surprising to some. The two participants interviews that I watched were Mackenzie and Lisa.

RJA #11 Part 2

Teague, Michael L., Sara L. C. MacKenzie, and David M. Rosenthal. Your Health Today: Brief. New York, NY: McGraw-Hill Higher Education, 2009. Print

This book is a health book which includes a chapter on teen drug abuse. It has several solutions toward the end of chapter of ideas that I can put into my paper such as Harm reduction, treatment programs, and prevention strategies. It has pro and con arguments for some of the solutions that oppose my topic as well as agree with it. Overall it is very informative on drugs in society and has some visual aids of statistics of popular drugs being abused that is updated.

"TV5 Investigation: Teen Drug Abuse." blinkx.com. Web. 11 Apr 2010.

This video investigates drug used among teens and in particular focuses on a story of a young man named Chris White who become addicting to prescription drugs by stealing from his mother's medicine cabinet and purse. This video originally was on News 5 to let parents know that teen prescription drug use is on the rise and is increasing. It reveals what teen's do at parties, and how easy the access is to drugs that teen's think are "safe". Parents don't realize that their teen may be getting these drugs so easily and that their own drug use behavior may influence their teen to this habit.

Cloud, John, Carole Buia, Greg Fulton, Alice Park, Elaine Shannon, and Dick Thompson. "Happiness Is...A Pill? The Science: The Lure of Ecstasy." Time Magazine. CNN, 05 June 2000. Web. 11 Apr. 2010

This article from Time Magazine talks about how Ecstasy is being used more in other places than just raves. This drug was popular in the 90's and researchers are finding that this drug is slowly making its way to becoming popular everywhere. Opinions of high school is students is revealed which gives me evidence of how teen's experiment with drugs in cliques due to Karen's statement as an 18 year old. Ecstasy is fun to teen's and this article reveals the actually dangerous side effects of this drug that parents and teen's need to take more serious that could outweigh the fun in this drug.

Dan, Hogan, ed. "Genetic Link to Heave Substance Abuse in Teenagers." Science Daily. News.com, 19 Mar. 2007. Web. 11 Apr. 2010. .

This article I from Science Daily reveals that genetics have the biggest influence on whether a teen will further pursue drug abuse leading to addiction and that the other factors just decide the fact that a teen will try drugs. Researchers conduct studies on the genetic links that are found in parent's who suffer from addiction. These agrees with my argument about the development factors that influence drug addiction in a teen's life. It also talks about alcohol and how most teens do drink without developing a problem and more teens that try drugs do develop a problem.

"Teen Drug Abuse: Help Your Teen Avoid Drugs." Mayo Clinic. Ed. Roger Harms. 05 Mar. 2010. Web. 11 Apr. 2010.
This website gave a lot of information on why teens abuse drugs and some solutions that parents can use to prevent addiction from happening. Some solutions given would include communication, establishing rules, and knowing friends of the teen. The mayo clinic staff gives consequences of drug use that you can talk to your teen that could be very effective to decrease drug use in a teen. It gives some warning signs in case you see these in your teens and how to identify if your teen may be using. In case your teen is using they give treatment options to seek help if their drug problem turns into addiction.

RJA #10a: Annotated Bibliography, Part 1

Genetic Basis for Drug Abuse." Psych Central 19 Novemeber 2007, Print.
Kenneth S. Kendler, M.D., a professor of psychiatry and human genetics is the lead researcher in a study done on genetics and drug abuse. Kendler states that this study also confirmed the strong role that genetic factors play in influencing our vulnerability to drug abuse and dependence. In the past studies that were conducted were only males, and this was one of the first ones to be done on both sexes which gives us more information. This study also goes a step further with revealing information on other substances such as caffeine and nicotine and the correlation it has with illicit substances.

Anderson, David. "Trauma-Related Substance Abuse Persists After Mental Health Symptoms Abate." National Institute of Drug Abuse. 20.2 (2006): Print.
Dr. David Vlahov and his colleagues at the New York Academy of Medicine conducted research on figuring out if mental health symptoms such as depression had an influence of their substance abuse. He conducted surverys and interviews with individuals who lived close to the world trade center during the September 11th attack and a large number of random adults to compare his findings. He notes that symptoms of depression were more common among those who increased substance use compared with those who did not as well as more findings related to smoking. This explains the reasons why peope use substances during hard times.

Maldonado, Rafael . Molecular biology of drug addiction. Totowa, N.J.: Humana Press, 2003. 3-5. Print.

Rafael Maldonado discovers the physiology of how a drug works in the body and how it effects an organism. In the specific pages that I listed he's talking about opiod addiction and gives us background information on what the drug is and where it comes from. He talks about the chemical properties and how the body can become dependant on it. He notes that the Central Nervous System has a huge influence on how one becomes dependant on the drug. He also does a study on mice to show that his findings are true which is part of his supporting evidence.
