RJA #9c

RJA #9c Presentation Plan

I. Introduction
A.Background info on drug addiction
a. state focus
B. Research Question
b. How can the use of street drugs lead to addiction in teens?

II. Reasons
A. Personality- risky behavior, depression…etc.
B. The physiology of drugs- changes to the brain involuntary leading to uncontrollable drug use and dependence
C. Developmental factors- genetics/inherited
D. Peer pressure/Social factors

III. Counterarguements
A. Nicotine is more addictive than street drugs
a. the side effects aren't as severe as seen in drugs
B. Addiction in only a matter of will power and people can stop using if they really set their mind to it.
b. people still relapse over and over before they are able to stop
C. Parents limiting the access their teens have to drugs decrease addiction and incorporating a "good way of life"
c. drugs can still be found elsewhere or be presented with them other than at the home.

IV. How addiction is a problem (dangerous side effects)
A. Ability to pay attention
B. Mask emotional problems such as anxiety, depression, mood swings, or hallucinations
C. Associated with health problems ranging from HIV/AIDS to liver damage depending on how the body takes each kind of drug
D. Death by suicide or homicide

V. Conclusion
A. Restate Thesis/Claim
The use of drugs in teens have serious side effects that should be taken more serious which can lead to addiction by changes in the brain involuntary leading to uncontrollable drug use and dependance due to the physiology of the drug. This happens through social and development factors as well as through the personality of an individual. These all influence the likely-hood of a teen struggling with addiction.

VI. Solution
A. Parents communicating and limiting access to substances
B. Extracurricular activities
C. Looking out for warning signs or symptoms such as lying or physical effects.
D. Seeking treatment to the direct problem

RJA#9b Arguement
Research Question: How can the use of street drugs lead to addiction in teens?

Thesis/Claim: The use of drugs in teens have serious side effects that should be taken more serious which can lead to addiction by changes in the brain involuntary leading to uncontrollable drug use and dependance due to the physiology of the drug. This happens through social and development factors as well as the personality. These all influence the likely-hood of one becoming addicted.
Reasons:
•Personality- risky behavior, depression…etc.
•The physiology of drugs- changes to the brain involuntary leading to uncontrollable drug use and dependence
•Developmental factors- genetics/inherited•Peer pressure/Social factors
Counterarguements:
1. Nicotine rates for addiction are higher
2. Environment factors such as a good way of life can prevent risky experiementating behavior.
3. Addiction in only a matter of will power and people can stop using if they really set their mind to it.
4. Limiting the access that teens have to drugs decrease addiction

Thesis Statement:
Research Question:
How can the use of street drugs lead to addiction in teens?

Precise Claim:
The use of drugs in teens lead to addiction.

Reasons/Blueprints:
•Personality- risky behavior, depression…etc.
•The physiology of drugs- changes to the brain involuntary leading to uncontrollable drug use and dependence
•Developmental factors- genetics/inherited
•Peer pressure/Social factors

Complete thesis statement:
The use of drugs in teens have serious side effects that should be taken more serious which can lead to addiction by changes in the brain involuntary leading to uncontrollable drug use and dependance due to the physiology of the drug. RJA #8a: Quotation, Paraphrase, and Summary
Original Passage:
As children enter the critical developmental period of adolescence, there is a significant increase in their risk-taking behavior, including experimenting with alcohol and drugs ([Arnett, 1992], [Spear, 2000] and [Steinberg, 2008]). These behaviors often lead to devastating outcomes, including drug abuse and dependence ([Chen et al., 2009] and [Grant & Dawson, 1998]). These negative outcomes have the potential to impact adolescents for the rest of their lives. Although there has been considerable research on adolescent risk-taking behavior, there are still many gaps in our understanding of the role genetics plays in the propensity to engage in risk-taking behavior. Behavioral genetic research indicates that as much as 40% to 60% of the vulnerability to develop dependence on substances is heritable

Quotation:
Several things can be the reason of addictive behavior in adolescents but one important factor that we should focus on is the study of genetics. Genetics can tell us who is at a greater risk of drug dependance. According to research done by Bradley Connor, "Behvioral genetic research indicates that as much as 40% to 60 % of the vulnerability to develop dependence on substances is heritable"

Paraphrasing:
Children going through their adolescent stage of development go through risk-taking behavior such as trying substances like drugs and alcohol. Experimenting with these sort of things can lead to dependance or addiction which can impact a child forever. There may be other reasons of why this behavior happens that are still unknown but one that could play a huge role is gentics. As research is done on behaviorial genetic research, we have found that the percent can lay anywhere from 40-60% for substance abuse that is heritable through genes.

Summarizing:
Research of genetics can go a long way in supporting that substance abuse and addiction can lay in the hands of genes and heritability. This can help us understand why some children's lives can be changed through risk-taking behvior and experimentation of drugs and alcohol.

Evaluation of Sources

The first source I will be evaluating is an Ebook found online by World Cat by the Auraria Library. It is called "Molecular biology of drug addiction." I think this is a credible source because not only is it an internet source it was also published as a print which means people review it closer to ensure quality.
The publishing company is a popular one, so its not just from anyone and the author has more than one book written in the same field in which he has education in. I would say this source is very credible.
Rafael, Maldonado. Molecular biology of drug addiction. Totowa, N.J. : Humana Press, ©2003

The next source is a reference article from encyclopedia.com which searches from various encyclopedias, dictionaries, articles, and thesauruses. The one in particular in which I was looking at from searching "effects of cocaine" was one through the Gale encyclopedia of medicine. I would say this encyclopedia is a good source to use.
Gregutt, Peter; Odle, Teresa. "Cocaine." Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine, 3rd ed.. 2006. Encyclopedia.com.

T
he next source I am evaluating is an article I found on EBSCO Academic Search Premier called, Genetic, personality, and environmental predictors of drug use in adolescents. It originally comes from the Journal of substance abuse . I would say this source is creditable based on the author's affiliations which several credible sources and research facilities which specialize in the correct field. All the authors have a PhD. in the correct field in which the information is based on. This source also shows many references within the journal which are creditable as well as the names of Research participants. This source was written in 2010 which tells me that it is fairly updated on most current research. I would say overall this one is very creditable.
Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment; Mar2010, Vol. 38 Issue 2, p178-190, 13p

The last source that I am evaluating is a website that I found on info.com about drug addiction and family impact. I notice towards the bottom of the website an advertisement so it may be sponsored by someone else. This website doesn't say the background of the author or anything about the website being updated, the most I could see is a copyright but anyone could get that on their website. I wouldn't say this source is very creditable because it doesn't tell me a whole lot about other references either just about their opinions which forms a bias.

Field Research Options

1)Do a survey to get results on how many people know someone personally who is suffering from drug addiction and how many of them actually have gotten help: such as a substance abuse treatment
2) Attend a lecture on drug addiction/abuse- learn about effects drugs play a role.
3) Interview with a professional or therapist to learn about the lives of drug addicts that they have talked to.
4) Interview with a health care proffesional on how the body gets altered by drugs and how that effects a person suffering from addiction
