RJA #8a: Quotation, Paraphrase, and Summary
Original Passage:
As children enter the critical developmental period of adolescence, there is a significant increase in their risk-taking behavior, including experimenting with alcohol and drugs ([Arnett, 1992], [Spear, 2000] and [Steinberg, 2008]). These behaviors often lead to devastating outcomes, including drug abuse and dependence ([Chen et al., 2009] and [Grant & Dawson, 1998]). These negative outcomes have the potential to impact adolescents for the rest of their lives. Although there has been considerable research on adolescent risk-taking behavior, there are still many gaps in our understanding of the role genetics plays in the propensity to engage in risk-taking behavior. Behavioral genetic research indicates that as much as 40% to 60% of the vulnerability to develop dependence on substances is heritable
Quotation:
Several things can be the reason of addictive behavior in adolescents but one important factor that we should focus on is the study of genetics. Genetics can tell us who is at a greater risk of drug dependance. According to research done by Bradley Connor, "Behvioral genetic research indicates that as much as 40% to 60 % of the vulnerability to develop dependence on substances is heritable"
Paraphrasing:
Children going through their adolescent stage of development go through risk-taking behavior such as trying substances like drugs and alcohol. Experimenting with these sort of things can lead to dependance or addiction which can impact a child forever. There may be other reasons of why this behavior happens that are still unknown but one that could play a huge role is gentics. As research is done on behaviorial genetic research, we have found that the percent can lay anywhere from 40-60% for substance abuse that is heritable through genes.
Summarizing:
Research of genetics can go a long way in supporting that substance abuse and addiction can lay in the hands of genes and heritability. This can help us understand why some children's lives can be changed through risk-taking behvior and experimentation of drugs and alcohol.
